Henry viii

So, I am totally getting my fill of this dude. Last week the complete second season of The Tudors. Then a viewing of The Other Boleyn Girl. Only to follow that up with the complete first season of The Tudors. (which at the time of this writing i still have four episodes left to watch)

Yes, yes, it was certainly not my intention to watch the second season first, but it was all OnDemand offered and until i procured a copy of the first season. I really wanted to see if it was any good. I have to say, it was GOOD. Excellent writing, wonderful character, and a great story.

I can however say for certain, if i were to have watched the first season first, I may not have given the second season a chance. The second season just seemed cleaner, the actors had formed the characters they played. the plot was more meaty. Now i will acknowledge it is hard to say for sure. Knowing before hand what the characters become, the roles may feel more shallow, then the would if i had no prior knowledge of them. But i am not by a mile saying the first season was bad.

But that brings me to the movie The Other Boleyn Girl. Before I get to the comparisons, I will say I did, like most movies, enjoy the flick. although it was nothing spectacular. Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson, were their normal unbelievably beautiful selves.

Now, I will be the last to try to pass myself off as a English historian. So, of the two story lines, which is more historically accurate, I will not debate. But which is more, thematic, I would say, the movie packed in more drama, claiming Mary Boleyn had a son by Henry. But in the end trying to tell a story in less then two hours that is currently being told in a serial, gives no comparison. with sheer depth The Tudors can explore, it is far superior. And as much as I love Natalie Portman(and i do Love her), Natalie Dormer has the character down. You are always left with this strange confliction, is she truely pure at heart, or is she the 'devil incarnate'. She actually reminds me a lot of this girl I know(but that is tale for a different day).

I truly can not wait to finish season 1, and I wait very impatiently for season 3, and beyond.
But before then, Dexter Season 3 begins this fall. I will talk about my love of that show in a later blog.

So kudos to Showtime on overthrowing HBO's hold on me, for great television. well at least until the next season of Entourage.
