With the possible theatrical re-release of The Dark Knight. There is speculation that The Dark Knight could surpase the titanic box office record set by the aforementioned Titanic.
Domestic grosses of the two movies are quite close, with Titanic only edging the Batman sequel by just over $85 million. An amount that could seriously take a licking with a re-release. The only hinderance to that number would be the DVD release of the movie a short month prior to the theatrical re-release.
World-Wide grosses is a completely different story. It is frankly, in this writers opinion that no movie will even come close to the record set by Titanics, $1.835 Billion. Due to the vast influx of piracy and the current trend of simultaneous world-wide release, it will be very difficult for a movie to get that close to the $2 billion mark again.
Case in point the 2nd and 3rd largest grossing films world-wide Just scratched over the $1billion mark.(Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, $1.13 billion and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, $1.06 billion).
A true testament to what James Cameron did with Titanic. Two relatively new stars, in a story where everyone knows the ending. The two closest movies(and not really that close) had a HUGE franchise behind them.
Side Note: Just imagine what Titanic could have grossed if James had picked Orlando Bloom over Leo. (for those that don't get that, He is in three of the top 5 grossing movies of all time)

Dark Knight > Titanic!
Leonardo DiCaprio I always disliked in middle school because all the girls talked about for half a year was how "hot" he was. But oh well he died in the end of the movie, haha.
/teenage rant off
Regardless, the Dark Knight and Christan Bale are amazing!

Agreed, and Heath Ledger was equally amazing.
But just to add, I think if it is done right 'The Hobbit' will have a great opportunity to break some records.
